The story of opal stretches across languages and legends, from the Latin opalus, Greek opallios, and Sanskrit upala. In Indian mythology, the Goddess of the Rainbow was transformed into an opal by the Mother Goddess, preserving her beauty and light as she fled unwanted suitors.

Ancient Greeks believed opal could offer prophecy and protection, while Arab legend imagined the stones falling from the heavens in flashes of lightning. In the Middle Ages, opal was known as the “eye stone,” valued for its connection to sight, clarity, and protection.
