The heart on this features Cerithium shells inlaid in jet, which I then embroidered with designed glass tiles, freshwater pearls and other glass beads. The pendant is hung on a string of Sardonyx rounds and ovals.
Sardonyx is a variety of Onyx that contains bands of Carnelian. Along with Peridot, it's considered to be the birthstone for anyone born in the month of August. The most important deposit of Sardonyx is in Sri Lanka, but it is also found in India, Uruguay, and Brazil.
Sardonyx was used by different civilizations over the last 4,500 years. A common ancient belief was that it would absorb and store negative energy. After carrying it for a while one would then clear and empty the stone before continuing to wear it again. Ancient Roman soldiers would wear a Sardonyx ring or necklace into battle with an image of Mars, the God of War, as it was believed to offer the protection andcourage needed for war. This stone was also mentioned in the Bible in Revelation 21:20 as “ A precious stone in the foundation of the heavenly city”.
For crystal practioners, Sardonyx combines the grounding and protecting energies of Onyx, with the strength and courage energies of Carnelian. This stone helps bring out one’s inner strength, to move towards accomplishing dreams and goals.

This is a handstitched one-of-a-kind piece. Rule of thumb with all jewelry: last to put on, first to take off. Oils, aerosols, sprays, etc. should be avoided. When in the car, make sure necklaces lay on top of your seat belt. To clean, please gently wipe with a damp cloth.
