Hubei Turquoise gets its name from the Hubei province in Northern China. For over 2000 years Turquoise has been mined in China and is used in many carvings and works of art dating back to the earliest dynasties.   Marco Polo reported turquoise found in present-day Sichuan.
Turquoise derives its name from Renaissance France, where Europeans were introduced to the stone via Turkey (through stones that were traded from Iran).  Turquoise is said to be a healing and protective stone.
